Finding a good Doctor.(Financial assistance for medications)

Finding the right Doctor!

Bipolar is a serious illness that should not be taken lightly.  A good Doctor and a good Therapist are a must.  I think this is the first mistake that Bipolar people make.  This is the hardest thing to do because you do not know anything in the beginning about the illness.

Shop around for a good doctor!  I have been in some bad situations with Doctors who over medicate.  I have come close to dying from being over medicated.  How do you know what doctor to trust?  Ask the doctor a few questions and see how they react.  Notice if they look you in the eyes.  Do they turn their back to you.  Are they rushing just to get you out of there.

Take a person with you to the Doctor!  Make sure it is someone who will ask intelligent questions.  You are overwhelmed when you are first diagnosed so bring someone along to help you ask the right questions.

Study about your illness!  Learn all you can about your illness.  The more informed you are about your illness is the key to asking better questions to your Doctor.

Questions you should ask your Doctor!

If you have to take treatment for bipolar I disorder, there are certain things you should ask your doctor. Here are some helpful questions to consider: What medications are you prescribing for me to treat this disorder? What will the medications do to help manage my moods? Should I take the medication with food or between meals? Are there any foods or beverages I should avoid while on the medications? What medications, both prescription and over-the-counter should I avoid while taking these medications? What dosage(s) of each medication should I take? What time of day do I take the medication? If I forget a dose of medication, what should I do? What are the possible side effects of the medication(s)? Should I call you if I feel sick because of the medication? How can I reach you in case of an emergency? When should I notice an improvement in my mood? Are there other medications to consider if this treatment does not work?

Medications for the treatment of bipolar disorder (manic depression) can be prohibitively expensive. However, there are programs offering medications free of charge or at reduced prices. Some are from drug companies; others are from third-party volunteers. Found here are resources and information to help you get the medications you need.
